B. Projects in Progress

2. Educational Assistance and Development of Talent for Children affected by the Earthquake in Jogjakarta.

In May 2006 a strong earthquake occurred near Yogyakarta , which caused thousands of deaths, thousands more lost their homes, schools were reduced to rubble, and many children lost their parents and are still suffering from trauma. At the same time, Merapi volcano, which is located on the border between DIY and Central Java , also erupted, and thousands of people living on the slopes of the mountain had to be moved into temporary shelters to avoid the danger from hot clouds.

Since these events, many local and international NGOs and the Government are together rebuilding houses and other facilities which were destroyed by these two natural disasters.

LittleCare is focussing on repair of children’s educational facilities, especially for developing talents and overcoming trauma for those children who lost their parents and their homes. The aim is that if these children cannot continue their education in the future, the talents and skills developed by LittleCare can be used to make a living, without having to depend on others or donors.

LittleCare has constructed several Childrens Creative Rooms, which will provide:

  • Treatment of trauma with therapy a variety of games,
  • Teaching computer skills and English,
  • Panting classes,
  • Batik classes,
  • Theater, music dan vocal classes,
  • Development of creativity through educational games (LOGICO),
  • Mathematics through games,
  • Supply of reading books.

C. Other Education Aid.

Continuation of 6 Childrens’ Centres in Jogja Area.

At the above six Children’s Centres in the Jogja area, we aim to provide:

  • Computer skills classes,
  • English language classes,
  • Painting classes,
  • Development of creativity through educational games (LOGICO),
  • Learning mathematics through games,
  • Developing reading through a library of childrens’ books.

From our evaluation of the children attending the Centres, we found that some of them have talents in painting which can be developed. From their family background, we can see that they do not have prospects for attending university due to the cost. So we plan to provide additional skills for them in modern batik, which they will be able to use as a source of income. We plan to introduce batik classses twice a week at each Centre, and to support this programme we need the following:

a. Three part-time teachers, one at each of the 3 Centres, to be provided with an allowance to cover honorarium and transport;
b. Ten good quality paraffin stoves at each Centre for heating wax;
c. Ten good quality metal pans at each Centre for heating wax;
d. Batik tools (10 canting for each Centre);
e. A set of materials needed for batik at each Centre (cloth, wax, dyes, pencils, carbon paper, drawing books, paraffin etc).

Proposed new Children’s Creative Centre in Kraksaan village, East Java.

The families living on the north coast of East Java mostly originate from Madura island, who settled in Java as fishermen and farm workers. We have been approached by the NGO “Merah Putih” who request building a new Childrens’ Creative Centre in Kraksaan village, where the literacy rate of children is very low. The Centre would be based on the model used in Jogja, for about 40 children, focussing on reading and writing. Land is available, donated by a local resident. The site is located in Kraksaan village, address as follows:

Land available for the Kraksaan Children’s Centre - Jalan Patemon Kav Peleman,, Kel. Sidomukti,, Kec. Kraksaan,, herKabupaten Probolinggo.

a) New Building for the Children’s Centre

The land available does not yet have a building, and it is proposed to build a new brick building, including a teaching room, reading area and toilet.

b) Proposed Activities by LittleCare

LittleCare will provide regular classes for about 40 children of elementary school age, giving priority to those who are not attending regular school. The main aim of the classes is to ensure that the children can all read and write in bahasa Indonesia. The classes will be for:

i) Reading and Writing;
ii) Drawing;
iii) Developing logical skills using educational games.

A teacher will be appointed by LittleCare, and provided with a monthly allowance. Other volunteers will be recruited by LittleCare from local residents. A small monthly fee will be charged to parents in order to cover operational costs.
To support this programme we need the following:

a. The estimated cost of the building is about Rp 40,000,000 (forty million Rupiah).
b. One part-time teacher (to be provided with an allowance of Rp 500,000 per month to cover honorarium and transport);
c. Book shelves (total cost about 3 x Rp 750,000 = Rp 2,250,000);
d. Teacher’s table and chair (total cost about Rp 500,000)
e. Computer, voltage stabiliser and printer (total cost about Rp 5,000,000),
f. Carpet (cost about Rp 900,000),
g. Small short tables for the children (sitting on the floor) (cost about 20 x Rp 115,000 = Rp 2,300,000),
